CHAPTER 01 — I'd Rather Do Nothing Than Act and Regret It

Why Do We Hesitate in the Face of a Decision?

The reason decisions are hard is the fear that we might make the wrong choice. Yet right and wrong are, in the end, nothing more than subjective judgments. Once the belief takes hold that deciding is difficult, we put decisions off or wait for the situation to improve on its own. Sometimes we believe we have no power to change our circumstances and simply accept a reality we dislike. Over time, this way of thinking hardens into a bad habit that robs us of life's opportunities. We must accept the fact that a decision is the very path to freedom. A decision can even become an exciting, thrilling process. When we make the decisions we want for ourselves, we solve the problems in front of us, reclaim control over our lives, and confirm the power within us.

The First Decision to Reclaim Control of Your Life

To awaken your sleeping capacity for decision, you must first believe, "I am someone who makes good decisions." You have to promise yourself that you will make deciding a habit. Now let's begin practicing how to clearly determine what you want. The less sure you feel, the better it is to choose quickly. Turn the small, everyday moments of choice into opportunities to train your decisiveness.
